Lego - the amazing little brick that is more than just a toy.
Lego, these tiny colourful bricks scattered across my living room floor, getting sucked up by the Hoover, and definitely making me want to scream f**k after stepping on one at 4 a.m. whilst creeping around the house getting ready for work.
They sound like an absolute nightmare!
But, Lego is so much more than a toy. For kids, it’s a tool for creativity and learning. For parents, it’s a golden opportunity to connect, laugh, and build something together - literally and figuratively.
When me and my wife had come to the end of our tether with our 2 boys constantly overwhelmed and fighting, not looking after any of their toys, the house a constant mess with random worthless toys, we decided to have a big sort out and declutter. We decided to try the 10 toy rule on a rotation (more about this on my other blog). And that's when Lego became the main toy in our household, and it worked a treat

Here are a few reasons why Lego is so good for children and adults alike
LEGO Sparks Imagination
One of the best things about LEGO is how it turns a pile of bricks into anything a child can dream up. Today it’s a spaceship; tomorrow, a new police car with boosters; the next day, a completely new world that only exists in their imagination. Unlike video games, LEGO puts kids in the driver’s seat — they are the creators, the problem-solvers, the storytellers.
Problem-Solving, One Brick at a Time
Have you ever watched a child figure out a complicated LEGO set? It’s like watching a tiny engineer at work. They learn to think critically, tackle challenges step by step, and celebrate small victories along the way. And here’s the beauty: these problem-solving skills carry over to school projects, friendships, and even real-life situations.
A Chance to Bond
Here’s where LEGO becomes a game-changer for parents. They say you should give your child a minimum of 15 minutes of undivided attention a day, but if you're like me that can turn into hours of building. Perfect bonding time.
It can turn into fun competitions, e.g. who can build the best spaceship, house, army tank etc.
LEGO invites collaboration:
- Shared Achievement: Finishing a set together gives both parent and child a sense of pride.
- Communication Skills: Planning a build encourages kids to explain ideas and listen to yours.
- Quality Time: In a world full of screens and schedules, these moments are rare and precious.
Growth Beyond the Bricks
LEGO also helps children grow emotionally. They learn patience, resilience, and how to handle frustration — especially when a tower collapses right before the finishing brick is placed. And parents get to model empathy, encouragement, and problem-solving strategies in real-time.
More than just a brick
LEGO is more than just plastic bricks scattered over the house. It can nurture creativity, it can build critical thinking, and, most importantly, strengthen the bond between parents and children. The next time your child pulls out a LEGO set, turn the TV off, put the mobile phone away and join them. You won’t just be helping them build a spaceship — you’ll be building memories that last far longer than any creation on the floor
Here are a few sets we have collected over the years and my kids particularly enjoyed building:
LEGO Harry Potter Dobby the House Elf
My 7 year old son loves Harry Potter, and is obsessed with Dobby in the films. So this was an obvious set to add to his collection. He really enjoyed building this set, it wasn't overly complicated to build, and he completed it relatively quickly. It has some good accessories from the movie, Tom Riddles Diary, sock and the floating cake. Dobby looks great on the shelf next to a few of his other Harry Potter sets. This set is a must have, especially Harry Potter fans.

LEGO Jurassic World Baby Bumpy: Ankylosaurus
Fans of Jurassic World and dinosaurs will love this LEGO set.
Here is a photo of our Baby Bumpy chilling out in the grass.

LEGO Marvel I Am Groot
I really enjoyed building Groot with my son. It's very hard to not like Baby Groot. Groot can be positioned and posed anyway you want. Also comes with an I Am Groot info card and a cassette tape.

Some of the best LEGO sets we've found for our kids are the LEGO Creator 3 in 1 sets. One pack of LEGO, 3 different builds. Endless amounts of fun for them. Watch them build, break it all up, build another one until they figure out which is their favourite. Perfect. These are the sets our kids enjoy:
LEGO Creator Exotic Parrot
This set can either be a Parrot sitting on a tree branch surrounded by colorful flowers. A blue and yellow fish swimming in the sea or a colourful frog that can move its legs.

LEGO Creator Mighty Dinosaurs
This is one of sons favourite creator set, because obviously it's dinosaurs, what kid doesn't like dinosaurs. Either create a T-Rex alongside its preys ribcage, a powerful Triceratops or a Pterodactyl. Bonus tip - download the LEGO Builder App to discover a 4th creation of a Brachiosaurus.

LEGO Creator Space Shuttle
Another firm favourite set in our house, build a Space Shuttle and an extendable satellite, rebuild it into an Astronaut with posable arms and legs, or rebuild it all again into a cool Spaceship with moving wings.

LEGO Creator Off-Road Buggy
Build an off road buggy with mega tyres for driving over sand dunes and forest trails, or rebuild in into a Skid Loader ready to lift items, then turn it into an ATV (all terrain vehicle). This LEGO Creator set is now retired.

LEGO Creator Super Robot
In this creator set you can build a Super Robot, rebuild it into a colourful posable dragon or a Fast Jet with adjustable wings.

Tips
Don't forget to download the LEGO Builder App to keep track of the builds you and your children have completed. If you lose any of the instructions you will find them all on this App.
We also have the LEGO Classic Brick Box Toy Storage, as the name suggests it's perfect for storing random creation LEGO bricks. Check it out here https://amzn.to/406y3uQ. I really recommend this box, hours of fun with plenty of creativity and imaginative play.
Another favourite of ours is the LEGO Classic Creative Suitcase, perfect for them to sort their LEGO into compartments and carry around with them.
